2020 Resolution: Commit to Your Oral Health

It’s the time of year for resolutions. Eat healthier. Go to the gym more often. Less screen time. These are all great goals, but what about committing to better oral health? Your oral health is extremely important to your overall health, and it is often overlooked. Here are some simple commitments that you can make in 2020 to keep you smiling.

Brushing Up

The most obvious ways that you can maintain your oral health are brushing and flossing, but not everyone does this properly. You should brush twice per day for two minutes using a soft-bristle brush (manual or electric) and fluoridated toothpaste. Brush gently to remove buildup and avoid irritating your gums. You should also be flossing every day to reach all of the gunk that you can’t reach with brushing alone. Resolution: Brush twice per day and floss once per day!

Water You Waiting For?

Drinking enough water is actually a big factor when it comes to optimal oral health.Water helps rinse away bacteria and neutralizes acid in the mouth, which could lead to cavities and decay if left unchecked. Are bad breath and dry mouth issues that you deal with? You guessed it; water can also help solve both of these problems. Resolution: Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day!

Crunch Time

Who doesn’t love snacking? I know I do. But did you that your snacks can improve your oral health? Munching on crunchy, healthy foods such as apples, celery, and carrots can actually clean and strengthen your teeth! They can also satisfy your appetite and keep you from snacking on sugary alternatives. Resolution: Snack on crunchy fruits and vegetables instead of sweets!

Make the Call

I’m sure you’ve been told this before, but seeing your dentist twice per year for an exam, cleaning, and fluoride treatment is extremely important to maintain your oral health and catch issues like cavities before they turn into crowns and root canals. A dentist can also spot symptoms that may be signs of other serious medical conditions. This can save you pain, time, and money! What are you waiting for? Call your dentist today! Don’t have a dentist? I hear North Orange Family Dentistry is accepting new patients! *wink wink* Resolution: See your dentist twice per calendar year!

As you can see, improving your oral health doesn’t require much hard work, just a commitment to making some small changes to your daily routine. Hopefully you feel equipped to put these tips into practice for the benefit of your smile!
